STUDENT DRESS CODE

Picture
Dana Middle School regards education as a serious process, and is committed to providing all students with a school atmosphere that is conducive to learning.  The purpose of a dress code is to facilitate education, not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire and appearance. Students should be clean and neatly dressed in a manner that will be decent, not hazardous to the health and safety of the students, and not disruptive or distracting from the educational program of the school. It is the responsibility of each student to dress in a manner appropriate for an academic setting.

The Dana Middle School Student Dress Code was developed in compliance with Federal First Amendment protections, and in accordance with all California guidelines governing student attire.  To maintain an effective learning environment, and to keep the focus of the school and classroom on student learning, all students must adhere to the following Student Dress Code:

Tops

  • No tops (to include sweatshirts/outerwear) with logos or trademarks of alcoholic beverages, suggestive messages or illustrations (sexual, racial, drugs, tobacco, weapons, or violent nature), or vulgar language.
  • Bare midriffs or bare backs, half skirts, low cut apparel, tank tops, bandeau tops, halter tops, bathing suit tops, sports bras, and see- through clothing without an underlayer are not permitted.
  • Tops must completely cover skin and overlap the waistband of pants, shorts, or skirts; no part of the abdomen may show.
  • Low cut tops are not permitted, or any top that could be construed as being suggestive or otherwise in bad taste to cause an inability to conduct instructional activity.
  • See-through or mesh type tops are not to be worn without an appropriate undergarment worn underneath.

BOTTOMS (Pants, Skirts, Shorts)

  • No baggy pants with legs that are obviously oversized.
  • No pant legs that drag on the ground.
  • No ripped jeans, sweatpants, stretch pants, leggings, yoga pants, or tights.
  • No bottom where any type of undergarment is exposed (male or female).
  • Modest shorts, dresses, and skirts are permitted. Modest is at least “thumb length” when hands are held at the side.

ACCESSORIES / SHOES / HEAD GEAR

  • No hats, hoods, or beanies of any kind are allowed to be worn inside.  In situations of inclement weather or medical necessity, appropriate hats/headwear are allowed outdoors only.
  • Open-toed shoes, open-heeled shoes, sandals and other types of slippers are not permitted.
  • No handkerchiefs or bandanas of any color carried as a clothing accessory, on the head, or in the hair.
  • No belt buckles which display letters, symbols, or numbers.
  • No chains which dangle out of pockets, including pocket watches, wallet chains, interlocking links, etc.
  • No dog collars or any spiked accessory that can be considered a safety hazard.
  • In general, no article of clothing/accessory that can be interpreted as “gang affiliated”.
